Fun Ways to Enjoy Essential Oils

Who knew that essential oils could be enjoyed in so many ways? Did you know you can scent paper? Scent beads? Scent pendants? Ok, you might be way ahead of me there. When I started my journey with essential oils, I had no idea. Here are some fun ways to appreciate the beauty and benefits of your oil blends.

Diffusers – Diffusing oils is so helpful in clearing the air, creating an atmosphere (think warm and comfortable, or bright and energetic), a natural and healthier air freshener. *This works in your vehicle also.

Body and Skin Care – By adding skin-loving oils to a natural unscented lotion, body butter, or soap, we nourish, moisturize, and smell nice.

Room Spray – Another nice way to freshen the air. Ditch those chemical sprays. Spritz the air with some citrus oils during those cold winter days and feel your mood lift. Help defeat that nasty cough and congestive symptoms with oils that are naturally designed to do this.

Clay Beads – I was given a set of beads when I began my studies at Aromahead. They sit next to my desk on a piece of glazed pottery that one of my daughters made in high school. When I need to focus, relax, or energize I add a drop or two to the beads and the scent wafts through the room. If I add too many drops, I move the beads to a location a little further away. It is my own private aroma space.

Clay beads from the very beginning of my learning adventure.

Bookmarks – What a fun way to enjoy a good book. Put a drop or two on a paper bookmark. The coated ones will not work well. Find the bookmarks that have a tassel and/or bead attached. Put a drop of your favorite oil on the tassel. It’s a perfect gift for the reader in your family or a student who needs some help focusing on their studies.

Potpourri or dried flowers – Forget about those bags of dyed and doused blends found in the craft stores. Place some real dried flowers in a glass bowl and spritz with room spray blend or add a few drops of oils, neat.

Jewelry – Add a drop of a “Relax and Breathe” to a pendant or bracelet before heading out on the road. When it gets a bit tense or overwhelming out there, take a deep breath. You’ve got your oils within reach at all times.

Laundry – Whether you buy laundry detergent or make your own, add some essential oils to create a naturally scented soap for washing your clothes. You can also buy some wool dryer balls and put your favorite blend on those to replace the toxic dryer sheets we are so familiar with.

Shoe Laces – Add some positive energy to a run by putting a drop on each shoelace before heading out.

Greeting Cards – We seem to have moved away from sending cards, but next time there is a birthday, get well soon, or the death of a loved one, think about adding a small swatch of fabric to the inside of the card. Match the occasion with an oil to offer celebration or comfort.

I am loving the new ways there are to use my essential oils. I carry a spray bottle in my car all season as a natural insect repellant. When I go out for walk or a hike I have the bottle with me and no bugs and best of all, no DEET. This is my recipe

Insect Repellant
2 ounce spray bottle
1 ounce Everclear alcohol
1/2 ounce Distilled Water
20 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
20 drops Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
Add alcohol to your bottle then add water. I use double the amount of alcohol to keep this shelf stable for a longer time.
Shake the alcohol and water mix to blend
Add your essential oils and shake to blend.

You can purchase something called solubol which helps keep the oils from separating from the alcohol/water mix. I did not add solubol when I made my spray and it works fine. I just shake well before spraying.

Do not spray near face. Do not get in your eyes. Spray around your clothing and shoes. You can also spray into the air around you and let the mist fall onto you. Always check a small area first to make sure any sprays will not stain clothing.

*If you are unable to buy Everclear or grain alcohol in your area, feel free to use the highest proof alcohol that you can buy. I would advize plain vodka as it has no spices or coloring added.

What are some fun ways you use your essential oils? I would love to know. Feel free to share in the comments below.

I originate from the northeast corner of the United States. Recently my husband and I packed up our lives and moved to a rural town in Middle Tennessee. I need to be outdoors in the sunshine. I need to soak in the scent of fresh-cut grass and flowers in bloom. This life change provides me with more time to have my hands and feet in the soil, growing our food and medicine. Herbalism and aromatherapy have become an intricate part of my journey toward a more natural way of living. Scented by Nature is my way of inviting you to make the break from synthetics and begin your journey to a more balanced life.
